Tips for Sugar Cravings



Oh yesssssss… I thinks we all know this oneeeeee!!! Sugar, sugar, sugar… you know, that stuff that is actually more addictive than cocaine.. that tastes amazing.. and is hidden in loads of our foods.. Which my friends means that even when you think you’re eating something not sugary it actually does have sugar in it. For example.. bread, salad dressings, pasta sauces, soup, breakfast bars, yoghurt.

The catch is also that.. The more sugar we eat, the more sugar we crave.

We get addicted to sugar from very early on in life as a lot of baby food is sweet, plus breastmilk is sweet (still can’t get my son off my breasts by the way but kind of explains it if it’s basically ice cream milkshake on tap..) It’s like we get wired up to crave sweetness.

Believe me sweet cheeks, I know, beating the sugar cravings is not so easy is it?! Been there.. Still go there occasionally.. Got the effin t-shirt!!

I mean, this no sleep thing I’ve got going on as a mom means that sometimes my body screams sugar at me and I’m not perfect so sometimes the binge gets the better of me, but coming from someone who could seriously eat their body weight in sweet stuff, cutting down is a huge achievement.

However. I have got good news non… yes!

I have some super cool tips for cutting down on the dreaded sugar stuff..

First of all let me introduce you to my friend Cacao.. This is raw chocolate, no processed shit gwarns.. pure healthiness straight from the plant, which *ahem* correct me if I’m wrong but if it comes from a plant then that means it’s salad, right? It is my saving grace. I use it in smoothies like my the best chocolate smoothie.. this is a great substitute for dessert or whenever you neeeeed chocolate. Chocolate chia pudding, chocolate avocado mousse.. the list is endless, but it is fab. You’re getting a chocolate fix without the processed crap and unrefined sugar.

Never start the day with something high in processed sugar because that will spike your blood sugar and set you up for the day with frantic energy that will suddenly crash and get you in to a cycle of blood sugar ups and downs. It is best to start your day with proteins and healthy fats.

Drink water. Our bodies are made up of mostly water yet most of us forget to drink. Dehydration makes us feel tired which then makes us crave foods and drinks that give us false energy but have no nutritional value. So drink more h2o.

When sugar cravings hit it can also mean that you are deficient in something like magnesium and other minerals. Eating leafy greens that are high in minerals will help this. Nuts, seeds, beans, avocados and bananas are also high in magnesium so eating any of those can help too.

Having lots of green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and romaine lettuce in your diet helps balance your blood sugars as they nourish your body on a deep level.

Eat healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, seeds and nuts on a daily basis. Eating a healthier diet in general will naturally crowd out the need for sugar as you will be bouncing with vitality and life anyway 😉

Green smoothies.. a great way to get more leafy greens into your diet, plus you add fruit which has natural sugar.. much better than processed unrefined sugar. You could try this one my go to green smoothie Adding good fats like avocado or coconut is beneficial too.

Av a cuppa tea.. Not breakfast tea with 3 teaspoons of sugar though 😉 Try a herbal tea or a hot water with lemon and ginger.

One of my favourite sweet treats is medjool dates, banana or apple with almond butter. Sweet yet not so naughty..

Sweet potatoes roasted with cinnamon is another good one for cravings.

A great tip that I picked up from Donna Gates Body Ecology Diet book is to have a glass of sparkling water with lemon and a drop of liquid stevia. Great book if you suffer with candida by the way.
